Elizabeth Daum diary

Abstract

This collection consists of the diary of Elizabeth Daum, which provides an account of her trip to Europe by ocean liner, July to October, 1926. Elizabeth Daum resided in Scranton, PA in 1926. Her travel diary indicates she was an unmarried, young adult who made a trans-Atlantic crossing to Europe in 1926. Other biographical information of Elizabeth Daum has not been found.

Abstract

This collection consists of an original color lithograph entitled “Les Amazones de la Seine,” created and signed by Eugéne Morsabeau Rosambeau in 1870. The print depicts a group of a dozen Prussian soldiers brought to surrender by members of the “Amazones de la Seine,” a French female military faction during the Siege of Paris (1870-1871).

Likely distributed by the République française, French government, these three ration cards are from the 1870 to 1871 Siege of Paris. One meat ration card from the 9th arrondissement (district) and two subsistence cards for bread, groceries, oil, and chocolate from the 6th arrondissement.

Henry Harrisse items

Henry Harrisse was a scholar and bibliographer whose particular interest was the discovery of America. He was born in Paris in 1829. The collection consists largely of items removed from books in the Harrisse Collection in Special Collections at Johns Hopkins dating from approximately 1876-1910, as well as correspondence about Harrisse after his death, dating from 1937-1941.

Scope and Contents

The material is diverse, including engravings, drawings, posters, and medals, ranging from the 18th to the 20th century. Much of the collection is oriented toward the avant-garde, so even the 18th-century material tends to be literature of the margins. It is especially strong in 19th and 20th century avant-garde material (Symbolisme, Cabaret literature, political and social satire, Surrealism).

The volatile period of civil unrest in France during May 1968 was punctuated by demonstrations and massive general strikes as well as the occupation of universities and factories across France. At the height of its fervor, it virtually brought the entire advanced capitalist economy of France to a dramatic halt. This artificially-created collection contains posters, protest leaflets, tracts, and photographs from these student protests in May 1968.
